Bio and Accomplishments

For nearly 25 years J.R.Smith has been providing fitness, sports conditioning, fitness therapy and weight management programs to clients all around the state of Kentucky.

In 1990 J.R. became the first certified trainer in Kentucky with the National Federation of Professional Trainers and opened the very first, full time, fully operational personal training business in Kentucky. Since then J.R. has worked with literally thousands of clients, sports teams, and various businesses helping them to achieve a high level of fitness and conditioning in order to live, function and work better every day.

Bio of J.R.Smith

In mid 2004, I was one of 200 selected out of 2,000 professional fitness trainers nationwide to take the first national board exam where I passed and became the first personal trainer in Kentucky to become NBFE board registered. I am currently the CEO & President of Total Healthcare Fitness.

Over the last several years, I have had numerous articles published by professional journals and with a reoccurring column in the Commonwealth Journal called “A Question of Fitness”. I have also been published as a contributing sports nutrition columnist to Midwest Christian Bodybuilding web site as well as one of the judges of their first annual world wide “cyber” contest held in November of 2006. I have also been a contributing columnist to the fitness and bodybuilding magazine in Philadelphia, Penn. called Fire – Iron Muscle and Power Magazine.

In addition to running my successful theraputic fitness and weight management company, I also work in the community through organizations such as the Lake Cumberland Health Department as an educator and presenter of wellness programs to the public; Women’s Health Awareness programs through the University of Kentucky extension office; Shape Up Pulaski ! a free community program to help bring awareness of the dangers of obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and the effects of non active lifestyles; local participant in former Governor Ernie Fletcher’s “Get Fit Kentucky” initiative; and the editor of a free local health and wellness eNewsletter called “Living Well in the Cumberland’s”.

In 2005 – 2006, I was named the official strength and conditioning coach of the Somerset High School, boy’s varsity basketball team. This distinction was awarded to me even after a local physical therapy business and Certified Athletic Trainer had requested to do the job. After a successful and winning season last year, I was awarded the position of head strength coach once again to the boys 2006-2007 season and have also been asked to head up the girls varsity team this year as well.
